How to merge VOB files

  1. Open the VIDEO_TS folder

Insert the DVD, or open a copy of it, and go to the VIDEO_TS folder. The movie is usually in files like VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB and VTS_01_3.VOB.

  2. Add the movie files in order

Add VTS_01_1.VOB first, then VTS_01_2.VOB, and so on. Skip VIDEO_TS.VOB and VTS_01_0.VOB, which usually hold menus.

  3. Merge to one MP4

Click Merge & convert to MP4. When it's done, preview the movie and download one MP4.

Why a DVD movie is split into pieces

DVDs store video in VOB files of about 1 GB each, so a two hour movie is spread across several files. Merging them in the right order rebuilds the full movie as one MP4.

Adapterry also cleans up DVD video along the way. It deinterlaces the picture to remove comb-like lines on motion, fixes timestamps so the parts join cleanly, and keeps the first audio track, since DVDs often carry extra languages or commentary.

Questions and answers

Which VOB files contain the movie?

Usually the largest set of files that share a number, such as VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB and so on. VIDEO_TS.VOB and VTS_01_0.VOB are usually menus, so you can leave them out.

Can I merge VOB files from a store-bought DVD?

Not if the disc is copy-protected. CSS-encrypted discs, which include many commercial DVDs, are not supported. Home-made and unprotected discs work.

Why is there only one language in my MP4?

Adapterry keeps the first audio track from the DVD. Extra languages and commentary tracks are left out.

Why do VOB files take so long to merge?

DVD video has to be deinterlaced and re-encoded to H.264, and a full movie is several GB. Use Chrome or Edge on a desktop with plenty of free memory, and keep the tab open until it finishes.

Will the DVD menus end up in the MP4?

No, as long as you leave out the menu files. The MP4 only holds the VOB files you add.
