MOV, H.264 and HEVC

MOV is Apple's QuickTime format. iPhones record MOV clips in either H.264 or HEVC (H.265), depending on the camera settings. When all your clips are H.264 with matching settings, Adapterry joins them without re-encoding.

HEVC clips, and mixes of clips from different devices, are converted to H.264 with AAC audio. That takes longer, but the final MP4 plays on Windows PCs, Android phones and most websites, which often struggle with HEVC MOV files.

Questions and answers

Can I merge iPhone videos with Adapterry?

Yes. iPhone videos are usually MOV files, and you can add as many as your device's memory allows. The result is one MP4.

Why do my HEVC MOV files take longer?

The fast join only works with H.264 video. HEVC clips are re-encoded to H.264 so the MP4 plays everywhere, and that takes more time.

Will merging MOV files lose quality?

Matching H.264 clips are joined with no quality loss. Other clips are re-encoded at a quality setting that looks good for most home video.

Can I merge a MOV with an MP4?

Yes. You can mix MOV, MP4, AVI and VOB files in one list. Adapterry converts them to a shared format before joining.

Do I need a Mac to merge MOV files?

No. Adapterry works in a browser on Windows, on a Mac or on any computer with a modern browser. Chrome and Edge on a desktop handle large files best.
