How to convert MP4 to MP3

  1. Add the MP4 recording

Drop the .mp4 file of the talk onto the page. Add the other parts too if the lecture was saved in several files.

  2. Choose MP3 and start

Set the output to MP3 and click Convert to MP3. The soundtrack is saved at 192 kbps, 48 kHz stereo, clear enough for voices and music.

  3. Listen, then download

Play the MP3 in the small player on the page to check the start and end, then click Download MP3 and copy it to your phone.

Why keep only the sound

A lecture or a talk is mostly about what is said, and the picture is often a slide or a person at a lectern. An MP3 is a fraction of the size of the MP4, plays in any music app and keeps going with the screen off.

Adapterry reads the MP4's first audio track and writes it as a 192 kbps, 48 kHz stereo MP3. If you add several MP4 files, their soundtracks are joined back to back in list order, so a lecture split into parts becomes one MP3.

Questions and answers

Can I turn a three part lecture into a single MP3?

Yes. Add all three MP4 files, put them in the right order and click Merge & convert to MP3. The soundtracks play one after the other in one file.

What audio quality does the MP3 from an MP4 have?

It is 192 kbps, 48 kHz stereo. That is plenty for speech and good for music. The MP4's first audio track is the one used.

My MP4 screen recording has no sound. Will it work?

No. If the MP4 has no audio track, there is nothing to put in an MP3, and Adapterry tells you so instead of making a silent file.

Can I hear the MP3 before I save it?

Yes. When the conversion is done, a player appears on the page. Listen to a few spots, then download the MP3 if it sounds right.

Is a two hour MP4 too long to convert?

There is no size limit. A long MP4 just takes longer, often a few minutes, so keep the tab open until the download button appears.
