How to compress a video

  1. Add the video

Drop the video you want to shrink onto the page. Any supported format works, from an iPhone MOV to an MKV screen recording.

  2. Choose how small

Pick Smaller file, Balanced or Best quality, or enter a target size in MB, such as 25 MB for email. Then choose MP4 or MOV.

  3. Compress and save

Click Compress to MP4 and keep the tab open. Check the new file size and the preview, then download the smaller video.

Presets and target sizes

Smaller file squeezes the hardest: the picture is capped at 1280x720 and the sound is AAC at 96 kbps. Balanced is a good default and keeps up to 1920x1080. Best quality compresses more lightly, also up to 1920x1080, for when the picture matters more than the size.

With a target size, Adapterry works out a bitrate from the video's length and lowers the resolution by itself when the target is very small. The result lands close to the target, usually a little under, but not exactly on it. A tiny target on a long video looks blurry. Phone videos often shrink a lot, since phones record at high bitrates.

Questions and answers

How much smaller will my video get?

It depends on the video. Phone recordings often shrink a lot, because phones record at high bitrates, while a file that is already compressed has less to give.

Can I compress a video to fit a 25 MB email limit?

Yes. Enter 25 as the target size in MB. The result usually lands a little under the target, though it is not exact.

Which compression preset should I pick?

Start with Balanced. Pick Smaller file when size matters most, or Best quality when you want the picture to stay as sharp as possible.

Does compressing a video always re-encode it?

Yes. Making a file smaller means encoding the picture again with H.264 and the sound with AAC, so it takes a while on your computer.

What happens if I add several videos to compress?

They are merged into one compressed file, in list order. To compress videos separately, add them one at a time.
