MOV and MP4: what's different

MOV and MP4 are both containers, a wrapper that holds video and audio together. MOV is Apple's QuickTime format, while MP4 is the open standard that nearly every device and website supports.

Many iPhones record in HEVC (H.265) to save space. Windows PCs, older Android phones and some websites can't play HEVC without extra codecs. Converting to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio avoids that problem.

Questions and answers

Why won't my iPhone video play on Windows?

It's likely an HEVC MOV file, which Windows often can't play without an extra codec. Converting it to an H.264 MP4 fixes this.

Does converting MOV to MP4 reduce quality?

When the video is re-encoded, Adapterry uses CRF 23, a setting that looks good for most home video. Small differences may exist, but they are hard to spot in normal viewing.

Can I convert a 4K iPhone video?

Yes, but the MP4 is capped at 1920x1080 and 60 fps. 4K files are large, so a desktop computer with Chrome or Edge works best.

Can I convert several MOV files separately?

If you add more than one file, Adapterry joins them into one MP4. To get separate MP4s, convert the files one at a time.

Is it safe to convert private videos here?

Yes. The video never leaves your device. Adapterry only records anonymous usage data like format names and a rough size range, never file names or contents.
