Merge MTS Files into One Video

Your camcorder split one long recording into 00000.MTS, 00001.MTS and more. Join them back into one video, as MP4 by default or as MOV, AVI, VOB or MP3.

How to merge MTS files

  1. Open the STREAM folder

Connect the camcorder or its card and go to PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM. Copy the numbered .MTS files to your computer.

  2. Add them in number order

Drop the files onto the page. They are listed in natural order, 00000.MTS first, so the recording plays from start to finish.

  3. Make one video

Leave the output on MP4 or choose another format, then click Merge & convert. Keep the tab open while the parts are converted.

Why one recording becomes several MTS files

AVCHD camcorders from Sony, Panasonic, Canon and others split long recordings into several MTS files, each one picking up where the last stopped. Adding 00000.MTS, 00001.MTS and the rest in number order puts the recording back together as one file.

MTS video is usually H.264, often recorded as 1080i interlaced, with AC3 (Dolby Digital) sound. Adapterry fully converts it, deinterlaces interlaced footage so motion looks clean, and turns the sound into AAC for MP4 and MOV. Files ending in .m2ts work the same way.

Questions and answers

Where are the MTS files on my camcorder?

In the PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM folder on the camera or its memory card. They are named 00000.MTS, 00001.MTS and so on.

Why did my camcorder save one clip as several MTS files?

AVCHD cameras split long recordings into parts. Merge the parts in number order to get the full recording back as one video.

Why is the MTS merge a full conversion?

MTS files usually carry AC3 audio and often interlaced 1080i video. Both are converted for MP4 and MOV, so the parts can't simply be copied together.

Will the lines on motion in my 1080i footage go away?

Yes. Adapterry deinterlaces interlaced MTS video during conversion, so the comb-like lines on moving objects disappear.

Can I merge M2TS files the same way?

Yes. M2TS files are handled just like MTS, so add them in order and merge them into one video.
