Small clips from older phones

Feature phones and early Android phones saved video as 3GP to save space. The clips are small and low resolution, usually with H.263 or H.264 video and AMR or AAC audio. Most 3GP clips are fully converted, but H.264 and AAC clips with matching settings can be joined into MP4 or MOV without re-encoding.

The merged video keeps the first clip's size, so a small phone clip stays small rather than being blown up. If a clip has a different shape, black bars fill the gap. AMR voice audio is converted to AAC for MP4 and MOV.

Questions and answers

Why won't my old 3GP videos play on a new phone?

Many 3GP clips use H.263 video and AMR audio, which newer phones and apps often don't support. Converting to MP4 with H.264 and AAC fixes that.

Will merging make my 3GP clips look sharper?

No. The video keeps the first clip's resolution. Converting can't add detail the phone never recorded.

Can I merge 3GP clips on my phone?

Yes. 3GP clips are small, so they suit a phone browser well. For a large batch, a desktop computer with Chrome or Edge copes more easily.

Can I mix 3GP clips with newer MP4 videos?

Yes. Add them to one list in any order. The first clip sets the frame size, so put the clip with the size you want at the top.

Can I get just the sound from old 3GP clips?

Yes. Choose MP3 as the output and the clips' soundtracks are joined into one MP3, back to back.
