How to convert VOB to AVI

  1. Copy the VOB files

Open the VIDEO_TS folder of an unprotected DVD and add VTS_01_1.VOB, plus the next parts in order for a full recording.

  2. Choose AVI

Set the output to AVI and click Convert to AVI. The DVD picture is deinterlaced and re-encoded to MPEG-4 Part 2, with MP3 sound.

  3. Put it on a USB stick

Download the AVI, copy it to a USB stick and plug it into your TV or player. Browsers can't preview AVI, so test it there.

From disc to USB stick

Plenty of older TVs and media players with USB playback read AVI files with DivX style video. Converting the VOB to AVI with MPEG-4 Part 2 video and MP3 audio lets you play a home DVD on them from a USB stick, without a disc drive.

DVD video is deinterlaced along the way and the first audio track is kept. The frame size stays at the DVD's resolution. Copy-protected discs are not supported, so this is for discs you made yourself and other unprotected discs.

Questions and answers

Why convert a VOB to AVI instead of MP4?

Pick AVI if your TV or media player is older and reads DivX style AVI files but not MP4. For phones, newer TVs and upload sites, MP4 is the better choice.

Can I make one AVI from a full DVD?

Yes. Add every VTS_01 part in order, VTS_01_1.VOB first, and choose AVI. The parts are joined into one file.

How long does VOB to AVI take?

It is always a full conversion, and a DVD movie is several GB. Expect several minutes or more. Chrome or Edge on a desktop with plenty of free memory works best.

Can I convert a copy-protected DVD to AVI?

No. CSS-encrypted discs are not supported. Home videos burned to DVD and other unprotected discs work.

Can I watch the AVI on my computer before copying it?

Not in the browser, since browsers can't play AVI. Download it and open it in a desktop media player, or try it on your TV.
