How to convert TS to MP4

  1. Add the TS recording

Copy the .ts file off the recorder's USB drive or out of your downloads folder, then drop it onto the page.

  2. Convert to MP4

Click Convert to MP4. A recording that already holds H.264 and AAC is copied into the MP4 without re-encoding. MPEG-2 video, AC3 or MP2 sound get a full conversion.

  3. Watch and download

Play the MP4 in the preview to check the start and the end, then save it to your device.

What's inside a TS file

TS (MPEG transport stream) is the format TV recordings usually come in. Set-top boxes, DVB tuners and IPTV or HLS stream downloads save it, and so do some screen and game recorders. Inside is H.264 or MPEG-2 video with AAC, AC3 or MP2 sound.

When a TS holds H.264 video and AAC audio, Adapterry moves both into an MP4 without re-encoding, so it is quick and lossless. Anything else, like an MPEG-2 broadcast with AC3 sound, is fully converted to H.264 and AAC, and interlaced TV video is deinterlaced along the way.

Questions and answers

Why won't my set-top box recording play on my phone?

Many phones and apps don't open .ts files, and some recordings use MPEG-2 video or AC3 sound. An MP4 with H.264 and AAC plays almost everywhere.

Is TS to MP4 lossless?

It is when the TS already holds H.264 and AAC, because the streams are copied, not re-encoded. Other recordings are fully converted at a quality setting that looks good for most video.

Can I convert a saved HLS or IPTV stream?

Yes, if it is saved as .ts. A stream saved in several .ts parts can be added all at once and merged in order into one MP4.

My recording has two audio languages. Which one is kept?

Only the first audio track goes into the MP4. Any other languages are left out.

Can I convert a two-hour TV recording?

Yes. There is no hard size limit. Large files take longer, so keep the tab open until it finishes. A desktop computer with Chrome or Edge works best.
