How to convert MPG to VOB

  1. Line up the MPG files

Drop your .mpg or .mpeg files onto the page in the order they should play, or add just one.

  2. Turn them into a VOB

Choose VOB and click Convert to VOB. The video is re-encoded to DVD MPEG-2 at NTSC or PAL size, and the sound to AC3.

  3. Build your DVD

Download the VOB and open it in your DVD authoring software, which adds the menus and burns the disc.

MPG and VOB are close relatives

MPG and VOB both carry MPEG video, but a DVD needs a strict set of settings: MPEG-2 at 720x480 and 29.97 fps (NTSC) or 720x576 and 25 fps (PAL), with AC3 sound. MPG files from camcorders, Video CDs or capture cards often don't match that, so Adapterry fully converts them to fit.

NTSC or PAL is picked from your clip's frame rate, and widescreen or 4:3 from its shape, with black bars rather than stretching. Interlaced frames are deinterlaced. Browsers can't play VOB, so the result goes straight to download.

Questions and answers

Isn't an MPG already DVD video?

Not always. VOB output must match DVD-Video exactly, so Adapterry always re-encodes the MPG to DVD MPEG-2 and AC3 at NTSC or PAL size.

Will my PAL camcorder footage stay PAL?

Yes. Footage at 25 fps becomes a 720x576 PAL VOB, and footage at 29.97 fps becomes 720x480 NTSC.

Can I put a whole tape's worth of MPG clips into one VOB?

Yes. Add them in order and they are merged into one VOB. Your device's memory is the only limit.

Will 4:3 tape footage be stretched to widescreen?

No. 4:3 footage stays 4:3 and wide footage becomes 16:9, so faces and shapes keep their proportions.

Does the VOB play in a DVD player as it is?

Not on its own. A VOB is not a playable disc. Use DVD authoring software to create the disc and burn it.
