How to convert MPG to MP3

  1. Copy the MPG files over

Copy the .mpg or .mpeg files from the camcorder, the DVD recorder's disc or your capture folder and drop them onto the page.

  2. Choose MP3 as the format

Set the output to MP3 and click Convert to MP3. Adapterry keeps the first audio track and saves it at 192 kbps, 48 kHz stereo.

  3. Hear it and download

Play the MP3 on the page to make sure it is the right recording, then download it and keep it with your other family audio.

MPG, an older format with good sound

MPG files hold MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video, the kind used by Video CDs, DVD recorders, TV capture cards and many camcorders from the 1990s and 2000s. Files ending in .mpeg are the same format and work too.

Adapterry turns the first audio track into a 192 kbps, 48 kHz stereo MP3. Add several MPG files and their soundtracks are joined in list order, so a stack of camcorder clips or capture files becomes one MP3.

Questions and answers

Does a .mpeg file work as well as .mpg?

Yes. It is the same format with a different extension, so add it here and it is turned into an MP3 the same way.

Can I join several camcorder MPG clips into one MP3?

Yes. Add them all, check the order in the list and click Merge & convert to MP3. Each clip's sound follows the one before.

What happens if an MPG clip has no audio?

It can't become an MP3 on its own, and Adapterry tells you so. Check that the camcorder or capture software was recording sound.

How good does the MP3 from an old MPG sound?

It keeps the sound as it was recorded, saved at 192 kbps stereo. Hiss or hum from the original tape or microphone stays.

Can I listen to the MPG soundtrack on the page?

Yes. When the MP3 is ready, it plays in the small player on the page, so you can check it before you download.
