How to convert MPG to MOV

  1. Drop the MPG clips

Add one .mpg or .mpeg file, or a whole set in playing order to get a single MOV.

  2. Re-encode to MOV

Choose MOV and click Convert to MOV. MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video becomes H.264 and the sound becomes AAC. Interlaced frames are deinterlaced.

  3. Edit on your Mac

Preview the MOV, save it, and import it into iMovie, Final Cut Pro or Photos.

Old MPEG footage in Apple apps

MPG files come from older camcorders, DVD recorders, Video CDs and TV capture cards. They hold MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video, which doesn't always import cleanly into Apple's editing apps.

Converting to MOV with H.264 and AAC gives you QuickTime's own format. MPG is always fully converted, and interlaced video from TV or camcorder sources is deinterlaced along the way. The frame size is kept up to 1920x1080.

Questions and answers

Why convert MPG to MOV before editing?

A MOV with H.264 and AAC is a format iMovie, Final Cut Pro and QuickTime handle well, so the footage imports and edits without trouble.

Does the MOV keep the interlaced look of my tapes?

No. Frames marked as interlaced are deinterlaced, so the MOV plays smoothly on a computer screen.

Can I convert a whole capture session at once?

Yes. Add every MPG in order and they are joined into one MOV. If you want separate files, convert them one at a time.

What quality does the MOV have?

Adapterry re-encodes at CRF 23 with AAC sound at 128 kbps, which looks good for most home video.

Is my old footage uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so the MPG never leaves your computer.
