How to convert MPG to AVI

  1. Select the MPG

Drop your .mpg or .mpeg recording onto the page, or browse for it.

  2. Pick AVI and convert

Choose AVI and click Convert to AVI. The video is deinterlaced if needed and re-encoded to MPEG-4 Part 2 with MP3 sound.

  3. Download and play

Download the AVI. Browsers can't preview it, so copy it to a USB stick and play it on your device.

Why turn MPG into AVI

If your TV or USB media player won't play an MPG, try an AVI. Many older players read AVI files with MPEG-4 Part 2 video, the kind DivX and Xvid players use, and MP3 sound.

MPG to AVI is always a full conversion. Interlaced recordings from TV or camcorders are deinterlaced, and the frame size is kept up to 1920x1080. The first audio track is used.

Questions and answers

Will my TV play the AVI made from an MPG?

If it supports DivX or Xvid AVI files, it should. Players differ, so try a short clip first.

Does MPG to AVI deinterlace the video?

Yes. Any frames marked as interlaced are deinterlaced while the AVI is made.

Can I watch the AVI on this page?

No. Browsers can't play AVI, so you get the file size and a download button instead.

Can I merge several MPG recordings into one AVI?

Yes. Add them in the order they should play and choose AVI. They become one file.

Do I need DivX software on my computer?

No. Everything runs in your browser. You only need a TV or player that reads DivX style AVI files.
