How to convert MOV to VOB

  1. Add the MOV clip

Drop an iPhone, Mac or camera .mov file onto the page. To make one VOB from several clips, add them all in order.

  2. Pick VOB and start

Set the output to VOB and click Convert to VOB. The video is resized to DVD resolution and re-encoded to MPEG-2 with AC3 sound.

  3. Download for your DVD tool

Save the VOB when it finishes. Browsers can't play VOB, so you'll see the file size instead of a preview.

How a phone video fits on a DVD

iPhone video is usually HD or 4K, while DVD video is 720x480 (NTSC, 29.97 fps) or 720x576 (PAL, 25 fps). Adapterry picks NTSC or PAL from your clip's frame rate and scales the picture down to fit.

Widescreen or 4:3 is chosen from the shape of the clip, and a portrait video keeps its shape with black bars at the sides instead of being stretched. Keep in mind that the VOB is a building block: DVD authoring software turns it into a disc with menus.

Questions and answers

How do I get a portrait iPhone video onto a DVD?

Convert it to VOB as usual. A DVD picture is landscape, so Adapterry adds black bars on each side instead of stretching your video.

Does the iPhone frame rate decide NTSC or PAL?

Yes. Adapterry looks at the frame rate of your MOV and picks 29.97 fps NTSC or 25 fps PAL to suit it.

Can a DVD player play the VOB right away?

Not by itself. A VOB file is not a playable DVD disc. Bring it into DVD authoring software to create the disc and its menus, then burn it.

What audio format does the VOB use?

AC3, also called Dolby Digital, which is part of the DVD-Video standard. The first audio track of your MOV is used.

Can I combine several iPhone clips into one VOB?

Yes. Add the clips in the order you want them on the disc and choose VOB. They are joined into one file at DVD resolution.
