How to convert MKV to VOB

  1. Drop the MKV in

Add the .mkv file. If a video is split into parts, add every part in order to get one VOB.

  2. Convert to DVD format

Choose VOB and click Convert to VOB. The picture is scaled to DVD size and re-encoded to MPEG-2, and the sound to AC3.

  3. Save the VOB

Download the VOB when it's done. Your browser can't play it, so check it in your DVD authoring tool.

Fitting an MKV onto a DVD

MKV files are often HD, while DVD video is 720x480 at 29.97 fps (NTSC) or 720x576 at 25 fps (PAL). Adapterry picks NTSC or PAL from your video's frame rate and chooses widescreen or 4:3 from its shape, adding black bars instead of stretching.

This is always a full conversion. The first audio track becomes AC3 and subtitles are not carried over. A VOB on its own is not a playable disc: DVD authoring software adds menus and burns it.

Questions and answers

What resolution does an MKV get as a VOB?

DVD resolution: 720x480 for NTSC or 720x576 for PAL. An HD or Full HD MKV is scaled down to fit.

Will a widescreen MKV look squashed on the DVD?

No. A widescreen video is written as 16:9, and black bars are added where the shape doesn't match, so nothing is stretched.

Are MKV subtitles burned into the VOB?

No. Subtitles are not carried over, and only the first audio track is used.

Is a VOB the same as a finished DVD?

No. A VOB holds the video and sound, but a playable disc is made with DVD authoring software, which adds menus and burns it.

How long does MKV to VOB take?

It depends on the length of the video and your computer. Every MKV to VOB job is a full conversion, so a feature length video can take quite a while. Keep the tab open.
