How to convert MKV to MOV
Bring in the MKV
Drop the .mkv recording or download onto the page. Add several in order if you want them joined into one MOV.
Make the MOV
Choose MOV and click Convert to MOV. H.264 video and AAC sound are copied across as they are. HEVC, AC3 or Opus are re-encoded to H.264 and AAC.
Import into your editor
Check the preview, download the MOV, then drag it into iMovie, Final Cut Pro or Photos.

Supported formats
Add MP4, MOV, AVI, VOB, MKV, WebM, MPG, M4V, 3GP, TS or MTS files, or a mix, and get back one MP4, MOV, AVI or VOB, or an MP3 of the sound. MP4 plays almost everywhere.
From Matroska to QuickTime
Apple's editing apps are built around MOV, the QuickTime format, and they don't open MKV files. That is a common snag if you record with OBS on a Mac and want to cut the footage in iMovie or Final Cut Pro.
The MOV holds H.264 video and AAC audio, which those apps handle well. If your MKV already uses both, nothing is re-encoded. Otherwise it is fully converted at a quality setting that looks good for most video, up to 1920x1080 and 60 fps. The first audio track is used and subtitles are dropped.
Questions and answers
Why can't iMovie import my MKV file?
iMovie and Final Cut Pro don't accept MKV. Converting it to MOV with H.264 video and AAC sound gives them a file they can open.
Does MKV to MOV lose quality?
Not when the MKV already holds H.264 and AAC, because the streams are copied as they are. Other codecs are re-encoded at CRF 23, which looks good for most footage.
Can I join several MKV clips into one MOV?
Yes. Add them in the order you want and choose MOV. They are joined into one file, with silence added for any clip that has no sound.
Which audio track ends up in the MOV?
The first one. If your MKV has several audio tracks, such as different languages, the others are left out.
Can I convert MKV to MOV on a Mac without installing anything?
Yes. Open Adapterry in a browser on your Mac and drop the file in. The conversion runs on your Mac, and nothing is uploaded.
