Convert MKV to AVI

Your older TV or USB media player lists the MKV but won't play it? Convert it to an AVI with DivX style video and MP3 sound, which those players read.

How to convert MKV to AVI

  1. Pick the MKV

Drop the .mkv file onto the page, or click to browse your downloads for it.

  2. Convert to AVI

Select AVI and click Convert to AVI. The whole file is re-encoded on your computer to MPEG-4 Part 2 video and MP3 audio.

  3. Load it onto your player

There is no preview, since browsers can't play AVI. Download the file and put it on a USB stick for your TV or player.

MKV in, DivX style AVI out

Many older TVs and media players were made before MKV was common, so they skip it or show an error. They do play AVI files with MPEG-4 Part 2 video, the kind DivX and Xvid players read, with MP3 sound. That is exactly what this converter writes.

MKV to AVI is always a full conversion, so a long film can take a while. Keep the tab open. The first audio track is kept and subtitles are not, and the picture keeps its size up to 1920x1080.

Questions and answers

Why does my TV skip MKV files on a USB stick?

Some older TVs and players don't support MKV at all. An AVI with MPEG-4 Part 2 video and MP3 sound is a safer choice for them.

Is the whole MKV re-encoded for AVI?

Yes. AVI output always uses MPEG-4 Part 2 video and MP3 audio, so every MKV is fully converted, even an H.264 one.

Which language track does the AVI get?

The first audio track in the MKV. Any other tracks are not included in the AVI.

Can I keep the MKV subtitles in the AVI?

No. Subtitles are not carried over from MKV files, so the AVI has picture and sound only.

How do I check the AVI if there is no preview?

Browsers can't play AVI, so Adapterry shows the file size and a download button. Play a short test on your TV or player before converting a long film.
