M4V is Apple's MP4 variant

M4V is Apple's version of MP4. iTunes downloads, iPhone and Mac exports and HandBrake often use the .m4v extension. Some Windows apps, Android phones and upload forms only look for .mp4, so they turn the file away.

An unprotected M4V with H.264 video and AAC audio moves into an MP4 without re-encoding, so it is quick and keeps the full quality. M4V files bought from iTunes with copy protection (DRM) cannot be converted.
