How to convert M4V to MOV

  1. Add the M4V

Drop an unprotected .m4v file onto the page, such as a HandBrake encode or a Mac export.

  2. Switch it to MOV

Choose MOV and click Convert to MOV. H.264 video and AAC sound are copied as they are. Anything else is re-encoded to H.264 and AAC.

  3. Download the MOV

Preview the MOV on the page, then save it and open it in QuickTime, iMovie or Final Cut Pro.

Two Apple formats, one quick step

M4V and MOV are both Apple formats, and both usually hold H.264 video with AAC sound. Some apps and workflows ask for .mov specifically, which is where this conversion helps.

When the codecs already match, the streams are copied into a MOV with no quality loss. Other M4V files are fully converted at a quality setting that looks good for most video. Copy-protected (DRM) iTunes purchases cannot be converted.

Questions and answers

Why turn an M4V into a MOV?

Some editing apps and workflows ask for .mov files. A MOV with H.264 and AAC opens in QuickTime, iMovie and Final Cut Pro.

Does M4V to MOV re-encode the video?

Not when the M4V uses H.264 and AAC. Those are copied straight into the MOV, so it is quick and keeps the quality.

Why can't I convert an M4V from the iTunes Store?

Purchases from iTunes are often copy protected (DRM), and protected files can't be converted. Your own exports and HandBrake files work.

Can I combine several M4V files into one MOV?

Yes. Add them in order and choose MOV. If they all share the same settings, the join is quick. Otherwise they are re-encoded to match.

Does the M4V get uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser, so the file stays on your device.
