How to convert AVI to VOB

  1. Gather the AVI clips

Drop one AVI onto the page, or several if you want them joined into one VOB. Put them in the order they should play.

  2. Make the VOB

Choose VOB and start the conversion. The video becomes MPEG-2 at DVD size and the sound becomes AC3.

  3. Take it to your authoring tool

Download the VOB. There is no in-page preview for VOB, so open the file in your DVD authoring software to check it and build the disc.

Why people use Adapterry

  • Nothing is uploaded

Your videos are processed in your browser and never leave your device.

  • No account needed

Open the page and start. No email, no password.

  • No watermark

Your video comes out clean, with no logo stamped on it.

  • Works offline

Once the page and video engine have loaded, you can keep working without an internet connection.

Supported formats

Add MOV, AVI, VOB or MP4 files, or a mix of them, and get back one file in any of those four formats. MP4 is the one that plays almost everywhere.

Old video, DVD standard

DVD video uses MPEG-2 pictures at 720x480 and 29.97 fps (NTSC) or 720x576 and 25 fps (PAL). Adapterry picks one from your AVI's frame rate. Widescreen or 4:3 follows the shape of the clip, with black bars rather than stretching.

The sound is converted to AC3, also known as Dolby Digital. AVI files are always fully converted, so this takes a while for long clips. The VOB is not a finished disc yet: DVD authoring software adds the menus and burns it.

Questions and answers

Is AVI to VOB a full conversion?

Yes. AVI inputs are always fully converted, and VOB needs MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio anyway. Long clips can take several minutes, so keep the tab open.

Will my 4:3 camcorder AVI get stretched?

No. Adapterry picks 4:3 or widescreen from the clip's shape and adds black bars where needed, so the picture keeps its proportions.

Can I join a whole folder of AVI clips into one VOB?

Yes, as many as your device's memory allows. Add them in order and the top clip plays first. Clips with no sound get silence.

Will a DVD player play the VOB if I copy it to a disc?

Not on its own. A VOB file is not a playable DVD disc. Use DVD authoring software to build the disc with menus and burn it.

Why can't I watch the VOB in my browser?

Browsers don't play VOB files, so the result goes straight to download. The page still shows the file size so you know it's ready.
