Convert AVI to MOV

QuickTime Player and iMovie may not open an old DivX or Xvid AVI. Convert it to a MOV with H.264 video and AAC audio, and bring it into iMovie, Photos or Final Cut Pro.

How to convert AVI to MOV

  1. Pick the AVI file

Drop the .avi from your camcorder, digital camera or old hard drive onto the page.

  2. Convert to MOV

Choose MOV and click Convert to MOV. AVI is always fully converted, so the picture becomes H.264 and the sound becomes AAC.

  3. Preview and import

Watch the MOV on the page, then download it and drag it into iMovie, Photos or Final Cut Pro.

Old AVI footage in a Mac editor

Many AVI files from the 2000s hold DivX or Xvid video (MPEG-4 Part 2) with MP3 sound. Apple apps such as iMovie and Final Cut Pro may refuse those codecs. A MOV with H.264 video and AAC audio in Apple's QuickTime container is a much better fit.

Adapterry keeps the AVI's frame size up to 1920x1080 and its frame rate up to 60 fps. Since every AVI is fully converted, a long recording can take several minutes. Keep the tab open until the MOV is ready.

Questions and answers

Why won't iMovie import my AVI?

Your AVI probably uses DivX or Xvid video, which iMovie may not accept. Converting it to a MOV with H.264 video and AAC audio fixes that.

Should I pick MOV or MP4 for my AVI?

Both hold H.264 video and AAC audio. Pick MOV if you edit in Apple apps or an editor that prefers MOV. Pick MP4 if the file is going to a phone, a TV or an upload site.

Can I preview the MOV before saving it?

Yes. MOV results play right on the page, so you can check the picture and sound before you download.

Does AVI to MOV take long?

AVI is always fully converted, so it takes longer than a simple copy. Short clips finish quickly, while a full-length recording can take several minutes.

Can I merge several camcorder AVIs into one MOV?

Yes. Add them in order and choose MOV. The first clip sets the size, and clips without sound get silence so they join with the rest.
