How to convert 3GP to MOV

  1. Pick the 3GP clip

Drop a .3gp video copied from the old handset onto the page, or click to choose it from your files.

  2. Make it a MOV

Set the output to MOV and click Convert to MOV. H.263 video and AMR sound are re-encoded to H.264 and AAC on your own computer.

  3. Import into your Apple app

Preview the MOV on the page, download it, then drag it into Photos, iMovie or Final Cut Pro.

3GP clips in Apple's apps

QuickTime, iMovie and Final Cut Pro work best with MOV files holding H.264 video and AAC audio. Most 3GP files hold H.263 video and AMR sound from early phones instead, so Adapterry converts both into a MOV your Mac can import.

A 3GP that already holds H.264 and AAC moves into the MOV without re-encoding, so it is quick and nothing is lost. Either way the frame size stays as it was. Phone clips from that era are low resolution, so the MOV won't look sharper than the original.

Questions and answers

Can I edit old phone clips in iMovie after converting?

Yes. The MOV holds H.264 video and AAC audio, so iMovie and Final Cut Pro import it the same way as a clip from a newer camera.

Why does my 3GP video look small in Final Cut Pro?

3GP clips were recorded at a low resolution for small phone screens. Adapterry keeps that size rather than stretching it, so it looks small next to HD footage.

Will the sound from my old phone survive?

Yes. AMR sound is converted to AAC, so it plays in QuickTime and Apple's editors. Only the first audio track is kept, which is all most phone clips have.

Can I make one MOV out of many 3GP clips?

Yes. Add the clips, drag them into order and choose MOV. They come out as one MOV file, ready to import.

Do I need a Mac to convert 3GP to MOV?

No. Adapterry runs in your browser on Windows, Mac or Linux. Convert on any computer, then move the MOV to your Mac.
